Choosing the right pump flange size is crucial for comfortable and effective breastmilk expression. The flange, also known as the breast shield, comes in various sizes to accommodate different nipple diameters. The correct size will help maximize milk output and prevent discomfort or potential injury.

To determine the right size, measure the diameter of your nipple (not the areola) using a ruler or measuring tape. This measurement should be taken after a feeding or pumping session when the nipple is at its largest. Most pump manufacturers provide sizing guides, but as a general rule use a flange insert closest in mm to the diameter of your own nipple. If the base of your nipple measures 15mm, use a 15mm flange insert. Occasionally people will need to adjust further for optimal milk output and either use one size smaller or larger. Be sure to measure both nipples, as they may be different sizes.
It’s important to note that many people require a different size than what initially comes with their pump. You may need to try a couple of sizes to find the best fit. Signs that you’ve found the right flange size include comfortable pumping, no pain, and effective milk removal. If you experience any discomfort, pinching, or if your nipples are turning white, it may indicate that the flange is either too big or too small.
Consulting with a lactation consultant can also be incredibly helpful. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that you’re using the best possible flange size for your needs, promoting a more comfortable and efficient pumping experience.
